Artist Review: Kasumi (Mura Mura Pocky)

Do not read this if you’re under 18.

Mura Mura Pocky is a doujin artist, mostly know for his/her doujinshi about Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica and Smile Pretty Cure.

Associated Names: Mura Mura Pocky (ムラムラPocky)/ KASUMI (カスミ)/ SULALY

Genre: Yuri, Comedy, Romance, Adult, Fantasy, Slice of Life

Works: 8/10
As mentioned above, so far, Mura Mura Pocky has only published doujinshi about two anime series, Smile Pretty Cure and Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica. All of these works revolve around one or even more yuri couples and while most of these doujinshi are worksafe, there’s also a few (number growing) of them that are really hardcore adult books, but more about that later.
Smile Pretty Cure doujinshi:
  • Smile For Me (18+)
  • The Thorny Path Known As Love
  • Shine! NaoRei Blooms in the Early Summer!!
The main couple presented in these doujinshi is Nao x Reika, while “Smile for me” also contains some other “couples” and with that I mean you’ll find all of the 5 Precures making out with each other.

I have to say, “Smile for me” was not my favorite doujin by Kasumi, simply because the sex is maybe going a little too far and I also can’t stand seeing Nao and Reika making out with anyone other than with each other.

But that aside, the other two doujinshi about Nao x Reika are just absolutely beautiful and so fun to read. They combine the two things that I love the most in manga and anime; some cute comedy and a sensual romance. And I gotta tell you, Kasumi is a real master when it comes to this!

Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica doujinshi:
  • Let’s Kiss Everywhere! The Pumpkin Prince and a Stage Play
  • Midsummer (18+)
  • Cute Idiotic Couple
  • Prepare Yourself!
  • SayaKyou
If you asked me, I would tell you to start reading these 5 doujinshi right away, because they’re just too awesome and sweet. Kyouko x Sayaka is the main couple in all of them, and even though you might not know these two, you should probably still give some of these doujinshi a try. I promise you, they’re enjoyable, even if you don’t know Mahou Shoujo Madoko Magica.

The plot is the same almost all the time: Kyouko and Sayaka start arguing or get into a fight over basically nothing and over the course of time, their fight turns into a make out session that is so intense that they just forget what they were initially arguing about. Sounds simple, yet this is exactly how I would see the actual characters behaving (or more like how I would want them to behave…).

Oh and it’s also worth mentioning that “Midsummer”, which is an adult doujin, was a rather pleasant surprise for me. The amount of sex is pretty high and saying that the whole act is quite explicit is an understatement. It is lewd rather than romantic and cute, and the ones of you that have already read some of my other reviews might know that I prefer cute over lewd. However, this doujin looks so stunningly beautiful that I even enjoyed some of the themes that I usually try to avoid in hentai doujinshi.
And those are;  Massive amounts of saliva,  weird looking sex faces and excessive amounts of body fluids splashing around all over the place. And yes I know, I’m really picky when it comes to adult doujinshi and manga.

Sex faces and saliva everywhere…

Art: 10/10
It’s been a while since I first came across some of Kasumi’s drawings, but I do remember that I immediately fell in love with this beautiful art. I have yet to find an artist with a more stunning art style than this one. And call me an art nazi, but for me the art style is sometimes even more important than the story of a manga/doujin itself.

Fortunately, Kasumi excels in both, art and plot, and even some of his/her overly explicit adult doujinshi have managed to capture my attention and rank within my most favorite adult works. Furthermore, what makes (most of) Kasumi’s adult doujinshi so absolutely pleasant to read is the fact that the characters look really mature and not as child-like as they use to look in many other doujinshi.

Yuri: 9/10

Kasumi combines some cute and sometimes sensual yuri with an interesting and funny story. You could say this is pure yuri entertainment with some beautifully done romance mixed into the story. Maybe the following is only a huge advantage for me, but I also fell in love with the way Kasumi draws kissing scenes, it just looks sooo good~

Total Enjoyment: 9/10
In my opinion, especially “Let’s Kiss Everywhere! The Pumpkin Prince and a Stage Play” and “Shine! NaoRei Blooms in the Early Summer!!” are two of the most beautiful and fun doujinshi I’ve ever read and I’ve already read a lot. Furthermore I also think that we can expect to see a lot more nicely done yuri doujinshi from this artist and right now there are still some of Kasumi’s works that are not translated yet (most of which 18+). But I have a feeling that Yuri-ism will translate some of them sooner or later, so let’s patiently wait for that to happen.

However, if you already like this artist or if you are now interested in Kasumi’s works, check out his pixiv account.
You’ll also find previews of some still untranslated doujinshi there and trust me when I tell you, these look freaking promising!

Also, find all the translated doujinshi either at Yuri-ism or read them online:

Side Note: Just when I finished writing this, I checked Yuri-ism and saw that they’re translating a new doujin by Mura Mura Pocky right now. This one will be about Mana and Rikka from DokiDoki Precure.

  1. Aww. It's cute how adamant you are that certain characters should only be with other specific characters. You like monogamy in your yuri. Such a sweet young woman, you are. 😉

I've always wondered about copious amounts of saliva. Is there people who actually do that? Considering I've seen much stranger things than that, I'm going to assume yes. And I don't really mind the weird sex faces or gallons of bodily fluids. Exaggeration isn't that bad sometimes, and to me, those are some of those times.

And another question: As an artist yourself, is there another artist in the yuri universe that you look up to as an inspiration? I've finally finished all the comments btw. 😀

  2. Funnily, just a few days ago I saw a couple kissing on the train, and that looked… very wet and sloppy…
I don't know whether they drooled since I couldn't stand the sight for too long, but I guess that answers your question 😛

I don't draw much anymore (and I've never been an artist anyway), but I always looked up to numerous artists.
Basically anyone that draws stuff that I like 😛

  3. If there's more saliva on your chin than there is in your mouth, then that's too sloppy. It's a simple rule to follow. Sometimes it's like they're not even kissing at all, just drooling on each other.

  4. The sad thing is that kasumi now draws het TT^TT I just wanted to get it out somewhere and your blog was the first I found where I could do it, sorry… I just now checked if kasumi did anything new but he and his circle partner are now doing het doujins and – stuff – I just hope that they return to yuri once more otherwise we have lost two authors to the curse of their libidos once again (I curse you geko! How dare you betray NanoFate like that!!!)

p.s. again I apologize for my rant and this message.

  5. I know… it's really sad.
He started out with only a few het pics on his pixiv and now look at this…
Ah well, I have faith in him. He's an awesome yuri smut artist, and he did stick with this genre for quite a few years.
I guess we just have to deal with some het stuff every now and then…
