My Personal Highlights of 2013

Since it’s the end of the year already, I thought it would be a good idea to just list my personal highlights of 2013 and kind of draw a final conclusion to see how “successful” this year has been for us yuri fans.

So first of all, let’s start with anime.
I think everyone will agree with me when I say that 2013 has been the year of Shingeki no Kyojin.
I have to be honest and tell you that I’m usually neither up to date with seasonal anime releases, nor do I pay attention to what shows are the most popular.
However, there was one anime this year that I could not miss simply because of its huge fandom, and I’m really happy I actually did take the time to see why everyone was going crazy about it.
Shingeki no Kyojin was without a doubt the most anticipated as well as successful anime of 2013 and I have to agree, it’s a fantastic show with a freaking awesome story. It is also one of the only (non-yuri) manga I’ve read in a long time and it’s even one of my favorites right now, which is so rare since I usually only read yuri stuff.

Well, other than the manga and anime, especially the yuri pairing YumiKuri (Ymir x Christa) has gained a lot of popularity this year. There are already tons of doujinshi, fanfics and even short animated clips of them out. And since I’m up to date with the manga, I can safely assume that the fandom won’t just stop here, but rather grow even bigger.
But since I don’t want to spoil you guys, let’s just end it here and come to another highlight that happened at the end of the year, not too long ago.
The news of the 3rd Madoka Magica movie had been around for a while and in October the movie was finally released in Japan, while some other countries had to wait until December to finally watch it.

I’m not one of the lucky people that could watch this masterpiece on the big screen, which is why I had to watch the camrip version, but even if I didn’t watch it in the best quality, it didn’t really downgrade my final impression of the movie. I think I gave it a 9/10, but after watching it a second time, I would now even give it a perfect score.
I know this is not the end of the series and I’m hoping for a worthy continuation very soon.
Finally, I’d also like to mention Love Lab and Yuyushiki, two of my all time favorite comedy anime. In my opinion the yuri undertones are a big plus for the shows, but even if we were to disregard the yuri subtext, I’d still love these two shows very much. I actually hope for a second season for both shows, even though I’m holding back a little when it comes to Love Lab. I’m pretty sure the continuation will destroy the little hope I have left of seeing Maki and Rico together and that really sucks…
Ah well, let’s come to manga next.
I guess what everyone is expecting me to name here is Citrus, a manga that has been blowing up this year. And to be honest, that’s also the first manga that came to mind when I started writing this.
I’ve been a yuri fan for a long time now, but I’ve never really took notice of what’s most popular, and mostly just read whichever new series was released.
Still, even though I can’t say this for sure, I think it’s safe to assume that Citrus is already one of the most popular yuri manga out there. I’m not sure whether I can compare it to titles like “Prism” or “Girl Friends”, which were both quite popular, but I have a feeling that the fandom of Citrus is already going way beyond what we experienced with the two other manga some years ago.
Personally, I’m a big Citrus fan and I absolutely love the attention this manga is getting right now. It really makes me happy to not be the only one fangirling about a specific series, so I hope this manga will be around for a bit longer.
“Flag Time” is another yuri manga that is getting a lot of attention lately and that alongside with Citrus got me excited the most this year. I really love the unique setting and of course the main character Murakami … 😉
Other than that, I also came to love The Flower and the Star”, “Notes from theGarden of Lilies and Morning Glory and Kase-san”. All three of them are somehow similar to one another, since they are all comedy manga with a similar setting, but they all got me excited in different ways.
Furthermore, I think it’s also worthy to mention that two of the biggest yuri titles came to an end this year. To be honest, I didn’t much care in Aoi Hana’s case, since I just didn’t like it all that much anymore, especially the last few chapters. But Sasameki Koto coming to an end saddened me a little more, even though I have to admit that in this case as well, I wasn’t all that interested in it anymore.
Finally let’s also talk about Visual Novels.
I don’t have much to say here since none of the games that were released this year already received a full translation, but still, despite the fact that I pretty much didn’t have the chance to play any of the recent yuri Visual Novel releases, there are still a few things worthy to mention.
First of all, 2013 has yet again been a year full of Sono Hanabira releases, which makes me quite happy~
A total of 3 new couples were introduced and 4 Visual Novels released, them being Atelier no Koibito-tachi, Tenshi no Akogare , Tenshi-tachi no Harukoi and Shirayuki no Kishi. I think it’s been one of the greatest years for the Sono Hanabira fans and with the amount of recent SonoHana releases, I think it’s safe to assume that 2014 is going to be just as great in that department~
Also I’d like to remind you guys that the 15th SonoHana installment will be released on 20th December, so let’s all look forward to it!
Well, I think I could go on with this list and also tell you about my favorite doujinshi of 2013, but I think the list would be too long and most people are more into original manga anyway, so let’s stop here.
All in all, I think 2013 has been an okay year for us yuri fans, nothing really outstandingly great happened, no pure yuri anime aired and even though I can’t really judge it that well, I don’t think there was an extraordinarily big amount of yuri manga being released this year as well. But then again, we should also not forget about the great ones that were released this year and we surely got some pretty awesome ones~
Anyway, I have high hopes for 2014 and I’m already looking forward to a lot of different things for next year, but I’ll tell you all about it in one of my next blog entries.
So now, I hope you enjoyed reading this post and if you like, feel free to tell me about your personal highlights of 2013 as well.

  1. Hey there, thanks for the nice post, was enjoyable to read :p first time commenting here but i would have to agree with most of your post; Citrus, Flag Time and Kase-san are all really great, and certainly the best from this year in my opinion (that I've read), I need more…. :3

Anime wise, there wasn't really much for Yuri this year I thought, so I'll have to give my thumbs up to a non Yuri, Chihayafuru, just really like the main character in that one.

Well at least we have Sakura Trick next month :p

  2. Yes. You have to watch Rebellion a few times before understanding how much a masterpiece is 😉

And really glad you put Flag time and Citrus here. I dont know why a few people have a probelm with Citrus it's excellent. And I love flag time too.

  3. It seems you have great taste 😉

Haven't seen Chihayafuru yet and I think I haven't even heard anything about this one, but I guess I'm very slow with new releases and I watch most anime because either someone recommended them to me or they have yuri subtext 😛

  4. I can kind of understand why people don't like Citrus. It's not that good story-wise and maybe all the random yuri action is also not a plus for everyone.
I can't complain though, I mean, the more the better, right? 😉

  5. I totally get the yuri subtext bit, after checking Love Lab ep 1 out I was waving the yuri flag of potential :p

And about Citrus (referring to the comment below, didn't want to spam with posts ;p) I mostly got into it at first thanks to its great (imo) art, some of the best I've seen, I get why some people may not like it, Mei isn't exactly the most likable character ever.

  6. Thats true, Mei really isn't the most likable character right now, but she's sexy so many people like her 😛
And the art really helps a lot, I mean I've rarely seen manga with such great art.
Well, there are a lot of great yuri manga/doujin artists like Mura Mura Pocky for example, but it's hard to beat Saburouta.
