Spring 2015 Anime Season: First Impressions

You all probably know the drill by now, so I don’t have to explain much this time. The only difference is the fact that this is a post done by both Rock The Vogt and I, since we picked up quite a lot of different shows this time.

Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha ViVid
How long have we been waiting for this anime, and now it’s finally here! I’ve been really excited to watch it, even though I knew that it wouldn’t focus on Nanoha and Fate anymore.

Well, to be honest, I think Vivio is a little annoying at times, and it’s only been two episodes, so that might turn into a bigger problem later on, but whatever. So far, we’ve fortunately already seen quite a lot of our two favorite Mamas, including a really nice bath scene they had together~

Unfortunately, Vivio was present as well, but since she was also the one who made that whole scene happen in the first place, I shouldn’t complain….

Mikagura Gakuen Kumikyoku
This one was a huge surprise! I wasn’t expecting anything that yuri-ish this season (other than NanoFate of course), but what we got here is something quite interesting.

Our protagonist happens to be a huge lesbian and a yuri fangirl even. Well, I’m not completely sure whether yuri fangirl is the right term to use here, but since she’s shipping herself with other girls, including game characters, I might be right with that.

So far, the show looks quite interesting as well, even though the whole idea behind it seems to be something we unfortunately see way too often in anime. Well, I guess I should wait a little longer. Maybe things will turn out differently as the anime plays out.

Re-Kan!
I feel like the first episode of this show started out really weakly but gradually became more interesting until the end of it, where some yuri was implied. Which actually made it pretty awesome.

Well, what can I say, I’m easy to please as long as there is yuri~

Still, I haven’t watched more than one episode, so I can’t really say any more. However, even though I really think that this show is the weakest of all the new shows I started watching, I won’t drop this so easily.

Owari no Seraph
Initially, I started watching this show simply because some people were making a big fuss about it online. However, I was quite surprised that after watching the first episode, I was really impressed with it.

It felt a lot like Shingeki no Kyojin, only with vampires instead of giants, and unfortunately, with a less likable main character.

The second episode, however, disappointed me quite a lot. I guess it’s hard to continue with any kind of event that is more tragic than what happened in the first episode. I mean, there are simply not enough important characters left to kill off in order to really come close to how the first episode made me feel.

Ah well, let’s just see how the next few episodes will turn out.

Domo! Now it’s my turn to mention the shows that I’ve picked up (other than the ones we’re both viewing).

Hello!! Kiniro Mosaic
KinMosa is back again, and I couldn’t be happier. It’s the start of another school year, and you know what that means… prepare for an avalanche of moe! Even the new, strict teacher is adorable and fits in perfectly with the others.

Aya is still having problems telling Yoko her true feelings, but she’s slowly making progress. They still have a ways to go to catch up to Shino x Alice, however. Karen’s back and better than ever, and Honoka is still her number one fan. Shino has Alice and Aya has Yoko, so maybe Karen will finally get herself a partner too.

Overall, if you enjoyed the first season, it looks like you’ll probably end up enjoying another go-round with Karen and the rest of the gang.

Nisekoi:
This is probably my favorite show of the season thus far. Season 1 was great, but we never found out who Raku’s mystery girl was. Season 2 seems to have what made the original so much fun, plus it introduces another Onodera sister.

More often than not, harems don’t end up being that good. Based on the strength of its characters however, I think Nisekoi: is one that definitely pulls it off.

I wish it was 20 episodes instead of 12, but as long as anyone other than Marika ends up being the girl, I’ll be happy.

Ore Monogatari!!
I’m a sucker for a good rom-com, and this one fits the bill nicely. The faux love triangle between the three main characters is interesting and is a little bit of a different dynamic than what is usually seen in these situations.

The characters seem likable, even the odd-looking protagonist and the female love interest with an annoying voice. Given that it’s the exact opposite type of show than what would normally be mentioned on YR, I can’t imagine many readers would have much interest in it.

Things have started to pick up in the romance department, and I hope that the old adage of nice guys finishing last doesn’t apply in this instance.

Kekkai Sensen
This show felt like a breath of fresh air compared to the other shows I had started up. What’s immediately noticeable is how stylish everything is. The jazzy music, interesting characters, and good sense of humor already make it more compelling than similar shows from yesteryear like Hamatora.

I have no idea where the story is headed, but after a couple of episodes, I’m definitely intrigued and want to learn more about the unique world the story takes place in.

Show By Rock!!
The only reason I picked this show up was thanks to its great name. Partway through the first episode, I didn’t really like how things were playing out. Thankfully though, things improved over the course of the episode and throughout the second.

The music performed in the show isn’t half bad, and all 4 Plasmagica members are charming, especially Cyan and Retoree. Retoree is the bespectacled dog girl who has a bit of a crush on Cyan, the cat girl. Who says dogs and cats can’t get along?

If there’s anything the show has already taught me, it’s that the anime world needs more cute animal girl bands. Oh, and that the story is ridiculous. I’m hopeful it’ll continue to focus more on the musical aspects and less on the CG monster battles, but I have my doubts as to whether that will happen.

Punch Line
I didn’t really know what to expect with this one, but this may be the most ecchi show of the entire season. The protagonist gains superhuman abilities after viewing a girl’s panties, so it’s pretty obvious who the target audience for this one is.

After only a small sample size, it’s mediocre, and there’s not much substance to speak of. That being said, panty shots never hurt anyone, so I can’t see myself dropping it anytime soon.

Gunslinger Stratos: The Animation
The arcade games never made it out of Japan, so I’ve never played them. Regardless, there’s no harm in taking a peek at what a show has to offer, so I gave it a go.

The story, the characters, even the action scenes themselves; everything seems so generic to me. I didn’t expect anything groundbreaking, but it’s becoming harder and harder to justify the time spent watching it.

Barring something seriously great happening in episode 3, this will certainly end up being dropped.

EDIT: After episode 3, this is now dropped.

Ninja Slayer From Animation
This was the big shocker for me. All along, I assumed this would be a legit anime, but much to my surprise, it’s essentially the spiritual successor to cult classic Inferno Cop (with a slightly larger budget). There’s no middle ground involving this show. You’ll either love it or hate it.

It’s the type of show where you have to turn off your brain in order to enjoy it. It’s not meant to be taken seriously at all, and if you do so, you may end up thinking it’s the worst thing you have ever seen. It’s extremely corny, and I love the hilariously bad animation and dialogue.

  1. I don't see Hibike! Euphonium anywhere 😦 it's about music, and by KyoAni, and there's this hilarous Senpai.
more spam…Many people also compare this show to K-On!

Apart from this, I'm also watching Re-Kan!, ViviD, Kiniro and Mikagura from your list, with the last mentioned as my absolute favorite of this season! (shipping intensifies after each episode ( ´༎ຶㅂ༎ຶ`) ).
Then there's this weird ultra short series (Urawa no Usagi-chan), but I don't know, somehow < strike >I'm too corrupted so that I'm shipping every girl in this show…

  2. @Mai-tan I started watching Hibike, but had to stop since my glorious internet connection failed to stream the video, so it's on my list at least.

Also, I gotta love how corrupted you are 😀
Be sure to tell me if this “Usagi-chan show” is good enough to watch.

@Max I only saw some screenshots that looked rather yuri to me, but this might as well turn out to be totally different. Either way, people seem to love it, so it needs to be checked out no matter if it is yuri or not.

Well, maybe most people are wrong, we'll see 😛

  3. lol, you're calling me Mai-tan? ( ื▿ ืʃƪ) (omg sorry…)
and ok, if Hibike is on your planned-to-watch-list, then I forgive you 😀 (still have internet connection issues? :o)
But I didn't start to watch it because there might be potential yuri subtext (this would be a bonus though), I'm watching it because KyoAni 😛

Well, Usagi-chan show is somehow random, with cute girls, school life, but since it's really short, I can spend 3-4 minutes on this show per week. Maybe we'll see some subtext later :3

  4. I didn't mean to make you stop watching, I just wanted to make sure there are no overly high yuri expectations. 🙂

Speaking of possible yuri subtext, any intentions of picking up Houkago no Pleiades? I haven't watched it yet but there seems to be some yuri going on.

  5. I'm in love with Re-Kan!! At first I thought weak too, but I change my mind so freaking quickly. It's very funny, and we can see so much [I'M SERIOUS] yuri in there. Girls, give a second chance to Re-kan! You'll not regret, at least the comedy is amazing! ><

  6. @Mai I'll always have problems with my internet 😛

    @Max Don't worry about it~
Houkago no Pleiades sounds familiar somehow, but I haven't started watching it yet. I'll ahve to watch a PV and decide then.

  7. This might seem a bit counter intuitive to the name sake of the blog, but do you ever consider doing some previews of less known manga/series that have just recently started or been going for a while?

It's relatively easy to keep track of ongoing anime, but not so much for manga.

  8. Show By Rock! and Mikagura Gakuen are easily my two favorites this season, Show By Rock is just silly fun and I like that they've made the crazed lesbian side character the mc in Mikagura. As for the rest, I'm enjoying Hibike! Euphonium so far, I'm making myself watch Vivid for the NanoFate scraps but so far the series as a whole is terrible, and Kiniro puts me to sleep.

  9. technically, this aired a few years ago, but did you watch Yuri Seijin Naoko-san (Lesbian Citizen Naoko-san) it's hilarious and random, it's only 2 ovas with one being only 6 minutes. I recommend the 2012 ova before the 2010. Naoko-san is an alien from the planet Yuri, who is plotting to conquer the Earth by yurifying it. Misuzu is a junior high girl and is always troubled by Naoko-san, who lives on the roof of her house.

  11. Well, it's not like the Nanoha series is the biggest on story but it would make sense to get a feel for the characters and their relationships. The first two series have movie adaptions if you don't want to invest the time.
Putting aside the need to watch them, they are good shows, especially StrikerS, so there's no harm in it.

  12. It's all-girl cast so subtext is possible. I'm still looking into it.

This one (anime coming in summer) on the other hand has subtext as I've already tweeted.

  13. for me im really happy to see nanoha vivid since its been about 8 years since strikers and i love the nanoha series to death since its an anime series i grew up with as a kid and i love nanoha and fate's relationship, im glad to see vivid gave them some moments together but i want to see more of it even if vivid is about vivio. i like mikagura since its seems interesting to me and the fact that its based off of vocaloid songs too, and the main heroine is just too funny when she goes all yuri fanatic, i think re-kan is okay, owari no seraph i like a lot, im really happy to see kiniro mosaic back with all its moe and yuri subtext, nisekoi i wasnt too excited for since ive read the manga and i know what happens and also the fact that the manga isnt going anywhere makes me not enjoy it as much as i would like to, ore monogatari i enjoy a lot and it cracks me up every single time and i picked it up because of nisekoi since they had a cross over chapter and when i read it i instantly found the characters from ore monogatari really likeable, kekkai sensen i also enjoy a lot since it reminds me of durarara but more supernatural, finally gunslinger i think its okay nothing too special about it. the other 3 i didnt pick up because i was either not interested in it or i heard it was bad

sorry for the long comment but i wanted to express my opinion on the animes

  14. It's already been 8 years since StrikerS? This seems awfully long indeed.

However, most people call the Vivid series the worst of the whole Nanoha story, so I'm really unsure how it will all work out, oh well…

Also, don't worry about the long post 😉

  15. Gakkou Gurashi ? A manga doesn't need to be non-serious nor non-gory to have subtext in it.

the artstyle and presentation of the Gakkou Gurashicharacters has created several subtext scenes in the series. (this is even shown in further MangaTime Kirara Forward volumes May and April2015 in which the most recent chapters show subtext).

  16. No way is Vivid the worst. Even with some people (lookingatyulenak) not liking Vivio's group as a new focus, it's at least got plentiful subtext there (like vivio x einhart)

Force is the true worst and only, imo. Completely new Male protagonist as focus? And with a device partner female ? It isn't Nanoha anymore. They should have just renamed to something else entirely. Nanoha hardly appears too.
Come now…..there's hardly any yuri subtext anymore starting with Force compared with past titles…..another reason I treat Vivid more kindly than what some opposed people have been taking to it is that it may be the last we see Nanoha and co as frequently…. 😦

  18. i agree with you ibara, i havent read force but i heard nanoha is a main character (do correct me if im wrong) and i also heard a lot of people say its bad and wait what a male protagonist why!?!?! doesnt it still have nanoha's name in it so why and on a scale of 1 to 10 how much subtext is in force??? now vivid on the other hand some people are mixed about it, me i love it even though nanoha and fate arent main characters, i like following vivio's story and her relationships with her friends especially einhart, it did grow on me like how strikers grew on me with the huge ten year timeskip after a's and the introduction to new characters and the new setting it had and not to mention adult nanoha, fate and hayate i wasnt used to seeing them as adults but it eventually grew on me. also i dont think vivid is officially the last time we will see nanoha and co. since there is that third movie that isnt going to be a recap like the first two movies were but we still have no info on it but i still have hope seven arcs will give us some info this year even though its been i think 2 years since the third movie's announcement, also lena k. ya it has indeed been long since strikers i feel old just thinking about it

  19. Oh, I think I totally mistook Vivid with Force…. 😛
I don't follow the manga. Ok, well I read the Omake because those usually had a lot of great yuri, but that's about it.

So it's Force and not Vivid? Well, that explains a lot, thanks for clearing that up for me 🙂

  20. Agreed. When I saw Eruna, i knew my endless search for a character that portrays my alter ego have came to an end. Mikagura's def my favorite now

  21. RockTheVogt picked it up, but it seems like it's not the greatest show of the season to put it nicely.
I'll just wait and see how the yuri processes. Maybe I'll pick it up if there'll be enough.
