Anime Review: Cross Ange: Tenshi to Ryuu no Rondo

cross ange review

Story: 6.5/10 and Characters: 9/10
Misurugi Empire – a futuristic utopia-like world in which people don’t feel the need to start wars among each other anymore. They are all united and live with a high economic status, which all roots from a mysterious power called Mana. Almost all citizens are able to use some kind of magic, enabling them to live their life the way they do.

The ones who don’t have these powers however, are viewed as misfits, or more like dangerous monsters who don’t belong in this picture-perfect world. Normas, as they call them, have to live isolated from the rest of the word, on a little island in the middle of nowhere, where they are forced to protect humanity and fight the dragons that endanger the world’s safety.

On her crowning day, Angelise, the princess of Misurugi Empire, who was loved by all citizens, is discovered to be a Norma. Just like all the others, she thereby meets the fate of being forced to fight for the sake of the people who abandoned and also hate her, for the rest of her days.

Personally, I’m a big fan of these “drastic change of life” kind of stories. Especially how they portrayed the way Angelise’s life changed, or more like shattered right in front of her, makes it quite an interesting start.

However, despite how well this change might have been realized, the first few episodes of this show still felt like the start of a poorly written sci-fi drama. We follow the story of the fallen princess Angelise, as she gets forcefully pulled out of her life and dragged into this new one full of pain and mortification. On many occasions, we see her getting mentally and also physically abused. On top of that, she’s also held responsible not only for the death of her loved ones, but also of some of her later comrades. In short, life is hell for her.

It was a little hard for me to follow this kind of development at first, because all it had to offer was to see the former princess fall deeper and deeper. When then all of a sudden, this random Tusk guy appeared, it made me realize that the promised yuri might not happen after all. I dropped the series and only started watching again after a few months had passed.

So yeah, the first few episodes were not really to my liking, but what followed was pretty good to say the least.

The forced drama in the beginning helped clear the way for the really well-done character development of the main character Angelise, or Ange, as she refers to herself after her big fall. We witness how she slowly accepts her fate, while changing into a completely different person alongside it. While she was fiercely hated at first, she makes her way to the top, making even her strongest opposer realize that she might actually be a great addition to the team.

Character-wise, I loved the show. I might have hated them all in the beginning, but the further we got, the more I fell in love with so many of them. And by the end, I absolutely loved like at least half of the main cast. Be it Hilda, Momoka, or even Salia, there was simply no way you would not love them by the end of the show.

Story-wise however, there were many things that bothered me. Despite the plotholes, the story felt way too overstuffed. It often came across as if they tried to make the story better by just adding in as many things as possible; first going with dragons, girls in skimpy clothing, mechas, and yuri scenes. Then they must have been like “Oh, that’s not exciting enough, let’s also add in parallel universes, time jumps, wars, and to wrap it all up, a godlike figure who’s the cause of all of this!”

In the end, I have to admit, despite how overstuffed this might have felt, it was still kind of awesome. It was a more or less well-developed world – two of them actually – and the evil godlike creator was probably the perfect way to make it all work out eventually.

I also enjoyed how this show didn’t only have one of these “drastic change of life” moments that I love to see so much. It has multiple ones, spanning from Angelise’s downfall as a princess, to waking up in a different word and time, and finally, to getting back to your time just to find out that your friends have suddenly sided with the enemy.

Animation: 7/10
Making a rating here was actually quite hard to do. On the one hand, the animation, especially during fighting scenes between the dragons and the Paramail mechas, looks really nice and fluid. However, they didn’t keep this quality for the rest of the show. In many scenes the faces in the background look distorted and sometimes just plain weird. Furthermore, they recycled specific sequences from previous episodes and simply added them again at another time quite a lot.

Almost looks like I drew it. ๐Ÿ˜›

This might actually happen a lot in other shows as well, but this time, it was just too obvious, and I’m not even talking about the numerous crotch and boob-shots.

Music and Sound: 9/10
Let me just point out that this show features three of my all-time favorite voice actresses, namely Nana Mizuki, Yui Horie, and Yukari Tamura. So yeah, with a cast like this, you can’t really go wrong in my eyes.

Also, how many of you actually noticed that Hilda and Ange are voiced by the same voice actresses as Nanoha and Fate from Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha? I actually fangirled a little at that.

With opening and ending themes performed by names like Eri Kitamura or Nana Mizuki, it’s also no surprise that this rating just needs to be as high as I made it. However, my favorite was definitely the second opening Shinjitsu no Mokushiroku by Yoko Takahashi:

Yuri: 6/10 – Romance between side characters + a lot of subtext
From the very beginning, this anime goes all out. We get full-blast ecchi, alongside quite a lot of steamy yuri scenes.

Most characters in the Norma base seem to have lesbian tendencies anyway, and many of them are quite open about it. Well, the main character Ange isn’t quite as gay as we’d like her to be, but she has some nice scenes with my favorite character Hilda, making them my OTP of this show.

Unfortunately, Hilda’s feelings are more or less left unrequited, because a certain “Souma-like” character (yes that’s actually a working adjective) named Tusk interferes with the yuri. Still, we get a lot of yuri from the side characters, making this a yuri success in my eyes.

Total Enjoyment: 8/10
If I could forget about the first few episodes, this would surely be a 9/10. If we now were to replace Tusk with a female character it might even be a 10/10.

Other than that, despite the many other bad aspects I listed above, I really enjoyed watching this show. At some point, I think I was actually addicted, if watching 8 episodes a day is a good indicator of that.

I’ll just end it with this picture…. ๐Ÿ˜›

  1. Dman! And here I thought I'd be the first to show a dick on YuriReviews. Well played, L. Well played. ๐Ÿ˜›

The series sold well enough for a second season to be made, so you could finally get the yuri you crave… or just more of shots of naked Tusk. ๐Ÿ˜›

  2. It was awesome for me. Sometimes so stupid, that cool and fun. + Ange really changed, I hated her on the start.

I was thinking, that in the end Ange choose harem ending (Tusk as main husband and baby maker, and Hilda as her waifu on the side. It seemed to me that Ange accepted Hilda's feelings. Or it could be my yuri imagination and wishes).

    p.s.
Officially Hello Lena, Hello Rock ! After months, years of reading things here, I decided to write comment ;D

  3. i enjoyed this a lot i regret not picking it up when it first came out and instead i picked it up midway through its run, i really did love that nana and yukari reunited again and the fact nana x yukari happened again for the third time with this anime, i just fanboyed so much since i ship them together irl and i still ship angehil no matter what also yui being in this made it even better since they are 3 of my favorite seiyuus like you lena k. also yuikaori had yuri characters which i loved so much since just like how i ship nana and yukari, i ship yuikaori irl too. also i did like the plot a lot, the first few eps did put me off but as it continued i just got hooked so much to the point where i just couldnt stop watching and i was excited for it every week when i finally caught up. the music was great i loved the first op and both eds, the second op wasnt bad but i liked kindan no resistance a lot more. also about tusk i didnt mind him that much, i did hate the fact that because of him hilda's feeling were somewhat unrequited but like i said before i still ship angehil no matter what and tusk is definitely 100 times better than embryo but i do agree if you did put a girl or even hilda (well that would kind of change hilda a lot) in tusk's place i think i would have love this anime even more than i already do. i also loved ange's development, at the start when she was first thrown out of royalty and into arzenal i really didnt like how she couldnt accept the fact that she was a norma her attitude was a little annoying but when she changed i was like omg she finally accepted it and she became a lot more likeable heck even loveable because she became so badass and that was definitely one of the points i liked about her when she changed. so to sum it up i enjoyed cross ange a lot, it had 3 of my favorite seiyuus, nana x yukari, yuikaori, a great plot, great music and good characters imo

  4. Hello there docBrown (Reference to “back to the future?) and welcome to the world of comments. The dark side of silent readers isn't as fun as ours ๐Ÿ˜€

As to your thinking, I can say that I agree with you! Maybe also only because of my wish for more yuri action^^
But I guess eventually Ange DID accept Hildas feelings so… we're not being delusional ๐Ÿ™‚

I am glad you enjoyed the show so much!
I have one questions aside from the Anime… You ship the Seiyuus irl?? Nice one haha. Anything you can recommend for an delusional mind like me? I love them together well ever since the first Nanoha Anime came out!

  6. I'm glad someone else likes Hilda, at first I hated her but after learning a lot about her she became my favourite. And her and Ange's relationship was the real highlight for the series, it felt like a way better development then the one between Ange & Tusk.
And speaking of Tusk, God I hate the guy so much, not just because he is interfering with the yuri but because he is the main character. Just about every scene this guy is in he has to take the spot light. The guy is hardly ever in the show but when ever he is he is the main character, he even kills the main bad guy, the guy who humiliated and raped Ange. This doesn't help out the fact that he is a plain boring character who's only feature is that he seems to misplace his nose inside Ange's crotch.

I was expecting Ange to a great female lead as well, she has all of the right things about her that makes her strong character. But instead she becomes the damsel in distress threw out this whole show, 5 times Tusk had to save her, 5 F***ing times. This is why I hate Tusk, he ruins the whole show about character building and put every character into their dumb archetypes. Don't even get me started on the explosion seen in which he somehow survives, he was even more of a god than the bad guy.

  7. glad you liked my review and yes i do ship seiyuus irl, its fun at times and sometimes i really do want them together ๐Ÿ˜› also there is even some fanart for yukari x nana which i find really cute and there are even some fun facts about them like how both love each other's singing and also the fact they ship nanofate and during a cross ange event they went all nanoha and fate, also same for yuikaori they also have many moments together irl, if you want i can send you some links and such either on twitter or google+. as for some seiyuu ships that i can recommend there is hanakana x ayaneru (hanazawa kana and sakura ayane), yuikaori (ogura yui and ishihara kaori) like i said before, toyosaki aki x ito kanae, and hiyocchi (hikasa yoko) x sato satomi

  8. Geez Lena. 25 Episodes in 3 days. I need to sleep but have to catch up on work…. *sigh* — not to say i didn't enjoy it! I really did. The recommendations of this blog has a weird power over me…. =P

Also, I find that I REALLY like the whole “drastic change of life” stories as you say (I frankly never thought this was a thing or that anyone else enjoyed them). Any others you can recommend? Needless to say the more yuri the better. =D

  9. Haha, I think we just share a similar taste, but that's all the better ๐Ÿ˜‰
Unfortunately there are not that many yuri titles with that tag, only Madoka comes to mind right now, Though, a lot of yuri stories actually show a character more or less drastically change their life, but it's usually done a less dramatic and heartbreaking way, so most of them don't count in my eyes ๐Ÿ˜›

  10. Same for me, she was such an annoying character at first, playing the part of one of the main bullies.
Though, after the incident with her mother, she really grew on me, and when we now add her adorable crush on Ange, she's just perfect ๐Ÿ˜›

Well, in chase of Tusk, I can't say I really hated him. He was definitely too important and on screen too much, but just like Souma, he was simply annoying and a huge threat to the yuri…

  11. I had given up this anime when I saw female protagonist with ecchi scenes with the male character,I even don't remember which episode was
I do not know if that anime has a good plot, but I feel disappointed, I was expecting to see only yuri scenes in this …: \

  12. Not as bad as I initially thought but nowhere near amazing as some claim. Fav girls are Hilda, Salamandinay and “Female Bulk”. Tusk was “meh” as expected. Him X Ange was “meh” as expected. Sad some of the cooler girls were demoted to crazy “I need a hug” status but they were still cool regardless.

  15. Hello dear Yuri-friends. I just wanted to share with you their own opinion about Cross Ange. I personally have not yet started watching this anime, but all I will say. I am otaku yuri 8 years, and I liked the one hand, this anime, and on the other, and disappointed. I was very pleased that at the beginning was a real harem yuri (Zola, Rosalie, Chris and Hilda), but Zola bit spoiled everything and I was glad that she had died (although I have my suspicions that she is still alive). Now about Ange and Hilda, they initially did not really get along with each other, as Ange had to lose his own family and the love of the people, not realizing it was just blinded by concern for their commander Zola. Only after meeting with his mother, who also had forgotten her, Hilda began to understand what was Ange, when she had to leave our home and deprived of their family whom she loved very much. So it began to awaken romantic feelings Hilda to Ange, but at that moment she realized that she did not get to win the heart of Princess as Ange loves Tusk, but despite this she confessed her feelings for what is unexpected for most Hilda (me especially), the princess gave her a long, tender kiss, and expressed a desire to see her (Hilda) in the new world. (Perhaps it will give a reason to the fact that Hilda and Ange will pair). I would sincerely hope that the second season will Cross Ange and it Angelise Ikaruga Misurugi and Hildagard Schlievogt finally start dating.

  16. Wait, are you 8 years old or have you been a fan for 8 years already?
In case of the former, you should probably not be watching such an ecchi show ๐Ÿ˜›
And didn't you say you haven't watched it yet, or did you only watch the most important scenes? I did so too in case of some anime ๐Ÿ˜‰

  18. Dear Lena, I'm 22 years old and I Yuri Otaku for 8 years already.
And believe me, I watched a lot of Anime Ecchi, I especially remember Maji de Watashi ni Koi Shinasai !! (I especially liked the yuri-couple Takae Tachibana and Saki) As I said, I have not started watching Cross Ange, but I've seen some memorable moments on screens and videos. In any case, I hope that Ange and Hilda will be a pair of the new season, if he certainly will. Also, I forgot to remind that Tusk reminded me very much of Souma for Kannazuki no Miko. But there is a difference between them. The amount was able to let go of Himeko too Chikane, because he knew how much they love each other. But Tusk, I can not say anything about him. Since I do not know, he might have sent Ange to Hilda that they both lived happily ever after. For it is only necessary to hope.

  19. Oh now I get it, 22 sounds far more reasonable ๐Ÿ˜›
In case of Tust, I think he is a lot like Souma, like he often tires to rescue his love, and especially like he stands between the yuri in this one.
However, in sharp contrast, he is the big winner of this show, not only successfully saving Ange, but actually also getting the girl in the end.
Well, you already know how much I liked this… ๐Ÿ˜›

  23. sorry to bring back this (i admit im fairly new on this shore, so i missed this one), but every time i think/read/hear about cross ange i get soooo angry, it frustrate me to see a show that could have been so good ruined by poor planning/decision/writing.
oh, @Rock The Vogt, i owe you a nickel, because for me Tusk was the worst thing of the show. Maybe it’s just my idea, but i picture things went like
SPONSOR (to writer): too much girls. put in a strong male for uncalled and worthless romance
    WRITER (to sponsor): but…
SPONSOR: NO BUT. DO IT! NO GUY, NO MONEY!
and probably something like that also happened when Tusk magically survived his suicidal attack. (ok, those are just my own delusions)
Shame on you, sponsor, authors, producer, whatever, you cannot turn to het a show like this. Damn, Hilda’s confession was one of the sweetest things i’ve seen in a anime up until now (well, yuriwise, of course). To throw it away for a politically correct romance…. mmggrrhhh!!!
Ahh, sorry for this rant. In the end, it’s worthless (as Tusk >:) )
