The first round is finally here! You guys decided on the participants, so as already said last week, we ended up with 128 manga to choose from.
Despite the fact that we might end up with, let’s say unfair rounds here and there, and possibly even “mini-finals” in the middle of the tournament, we still decided to randomly put the participants together. As always, the votes happen as a 1 vs 1 each round, cutting the participants down by half each week.

Three pairings between favorite manga, but only one truly tough choice in the first round. Based on early voting, I’m concerned about the fate of Notes From The Garden of Lillies and Pure Water Adolescence, and preparing to grieve the passing of Shinmai Shimai Futari No Gohan and After Hours. Thankfully, Ratana Satis and Morinaga Milk (as expected) are running strong.

Some were pretty obvious to me, Miss Sunflower, Bloom into You, Dear My Teacher and Lily Love are some of the better ones I have read in recent time, with Bloom into you and Dear my teacher being my favorites, I think those two would be really solid choices for the yuri genre.
the four I think are pretty much the front runners of this poll, each have interesting characters, stories and art styles which would translate very well into an anime. or anything with Ratana Satis, all seem like will be tough ones to beat. but there are a lot of surprises in this sort of competition.

I’m a bit surprised but very pleased for the support for Dear My Teacher. Isechi-san is quite charismatic and very confident, and yet still vulnerable, and Kaoru-sensei is kind, supportive, and honest. What I like best, however, is how well they take care of each other.

I honestly wasn’t a big fan of this one. Came for the pet play, but was put off by all the bullying/violence. And waaay too much back story on the antagonist.
Sol and Soo were the silver lining for me.

Anything that runs against Morinaga Milk and Ratana Satis is out of luck. I don’t doubt that they will make it to the final rounds. Really pulling for Pulse and Girlfriends ❤

Hoshikawa is one of the few I abstained on (because I didn’t know them well enough to justify a vote), but for you, chimeko, I’ll tick one off in favor of Hoshikawa. =) Now to read it… 😛

Chimeko, I abstained from the Hoshikawa vs LD pairing for the same reason as Shrikes and, following Shrikes’ lead, cast a vote for Hoshikawa. I’m sorry that my support is only likely to be symbolic.

Hooooooly smoooookes. A few of these were tough decisions, while others were just no brainers. There’s so many good ones, but I still believe Girl Friends is deserving of such an honor. I also find it hard to believe that I actually read most of these. I suppose it goes to show that while there’s plenty of Yuri out there, not a lot of them are worthy enough to be thrown into this kind of brawl.
A few of them matches are a bit surprising, though.

I’m actually hoping to get surprised with this tournament. Like… what if one or some of Milk Morinaga, Ratana Satis or Takemiya Jin’s works get kicked out of the tournament super early? Like how surprised would we all be 😛

I really like Morinaga Milk and Takemiya Jin, and voted for their works in every instance (except Secret Police, not my favorite), but both mangaka explore the same themes and involve subtle variations of the same characters in many of their works. When the time comes, I am prepared to vote against some of these classics to support the strong new wave of 百合 authors. OTOH, in Lily Love and Pulse, Ratana Satis has created very different stories with strikingly different characters. I will be interested to see which work has stronger support.

If that were to happen, it might be from fans being introduced to the genre at different times. Lots of new Yuri fans may have come from Citrus or Bloom Into You, and while there’s no doubt in my mind that they would go back to older works, they may find the style or quality is different and may be a turn off. Of course, everyone has their likes and dislikes, and I respect them.
I for one don’t like Takemiya Jin’s work, because of the style and how some of the characters are perceived and created. On the other hand, I’m a sucker for Morinaga Milk’s for all reasons.
Even the matchup between The Love Doctor and Hoshikawa Ginza District 4 kind of surprised me. I personally don’t like TLD, but maybe this is an example of newer Yuri having more exposure.
I still hope Girl Friends wins, haha. 😛

Honestly, we just need at least one Milk Morinaga adaptation. I’m not complaining about NTR and Citrus (well, maybe NTR was a bit of a strange choice) but a Morinaga anime seems like it would really help popularize the genre. Especially GFs… what I would give…
