Hyperdimension Neptunia is a very famous Japanese video game series of role-playing games. The entire series consists of fifteen games that started back in 2010 and are still in development today! The manga adaptation was created in 2010 as well and the anime adaptation was created in 2013.
I had no idea what I was getting into when I started. I just happened to find the two games during a PlayStation sale. I have only played Hyperdimension Neptunia Re;Birth 2 and 3 (the remakes of the originals from 2010) and it was a wonderful surprise! These two particular games are dungeon crawling, turn based, roleplaying games. They are easily some of the most well-made, creative, fun, and engaging games I have ever played – not to mention- a HUGE YURI surprise! The graphics are solid, the storyline is interesting (although too much text for me sometimes), the voice acting is superb, and the gameplay is a heck of a lot of fun. The enemies are a ton of fun to battle, they range from large and spectacular, small and cute, to just plain funny and extremely weird looking. I can promise you that you have never seen silly enemies like these!
Each game, of course, has a different story, but the games will always surround the same group of female heroes who must save their homelands from a common enemy (unless you play one of the spin-offs). Throughout the story, you gain each heroine into your group. You must pair up the girls into “Lily Couples”. I kid you not, that is the name. Each pair has their own unique special set of moves. You can create (and ship) any pair you desire and increase their “Lily Ranks” in order for the couple to get stronger. Each heroine is a girl, but then can transform into a more powerful form with an entirely different split personality. And they end up looking like… well, to be frank, an adult with hardly any clothes on (but incredibly more powerful! So I am not complaining! ;D)
Alright, with the gameplay now set aside, we can talk more about the yuri. There are MANY cutscenes in the game. The girls are constantly flirting with each other, and some characters are VERY protective of certain people. Beware though, there is A LOT of fan service scenes as well. Let’s take a look at some awesome examples! =D
Honestly, there is just so much to say about these two games alone. There are other features such as mini games, weapon/armor creation, different builds, powers, moves to explore, lots of dungeons, and costumes to buy. It seems to have it all. So here is a quick summary:
Pros:
- Interesting storyline with ridiculous cut scenes and great voice acting (localization of text is very good and oh so funny)
- Lots of yuri action, comments, and moments
- Lots of different creatures to fight
- Lots of creativity in general- the animation of special combo moves are really cool
- Absolutely fun set of characters to fall for and ship =)
- MANY hours of gameplay
Cons:
- The environmental graphics/dungeon layouts get repeated
- I can’t beat the last boss in Neptunia Re;Birth 2 >:[
- Can get grindy at times
My recommendation: Definitely buy it, the older games are always on sale. It makes me want to check out the anime, and I will continue playing the rest of the series!

What’s your estimate on the play time for either one?
Don’t have a Vita, so am looking over the PS3 titles to see if they might be similar…
Nice review !Tsun 😀

I will remind her of the comment, but even though she kinda agreed to keeping an eye on the comments, who knows if she’s still up for it 😀
So yeah, small warning, just in case 😀

Hmm, I played around 30 hours on Re;Birth 2 but I got stuck on a boss in chapter 5 (out of 8 for true ending) and didn’t finish it… and right now 25 hours on Re;Birth 3 and I am on chapter 6 out of 10 and I think there is something else after if you get the true ending. =P
Also thanks! =) Pretty sure these are all available on Steam as well.

Before Neptunia V-II came along my favorite entry in the main series/non-spinoff was Mk2/Re;Birth 2. Love me some Ge-Ge saving the day and showing off her Yuri Harem powers. Also RED getting a role in the main story instead of being DLC was also very welcome. The Neptunia franchise most of the time is a Yuri goldmine. It also has some pretty good stories that mix fun humor, sexiness and its fair share of seriousness. It’s one of my all-time favorite JRPG series.
Oh and Vert = Best CPU and Ge-Ge = Best CPU Candidate.

Re;Birth 2 is very good, but I absolutely cannot stand RED. Yes, she enforces yuri, but I swear to Godoka, halfway through the game I couldn’t stand the way she talked anymore (and more near the end of the game her face, even), I just skipped all her lines (not that she says anything important). If not for her, I would rate the game with a very good note.
Though I agree with the rest, it’s a good all-round game, with good yuri and comedy.
