There’s some more yuri news to cover, so let’s get right to it.
Well, this is some potentially interesting news. It was announced that we’ll be getting a new twelve-episode anime in the spring of 2020 from Ghost in the Shell director Mamoru Oshii, and he’ll serve as creator and chief director. This is his first directorial gig in over thirty years, and that’s cool and all, but why are we mentioning this on YR again?
Well, you see, the anime was described as a slapstick comedy that’ll revolve around a vampire named Mai and her high school friends. It’s supposed to be a serious take on the girl-meets-girl theme ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°), and the story will soley focus on five young girls and have no handsome men. Sounds interesting to me! 😛
Vlad Love is being brought to us by studios Drive and Production I.G, and who knows if this anime will actually have any yuri, but it definitely sounds like something to keep an eye on~
Moving on, looks like we have some more Yuru Yuri to look forward to. This time, it’s a mini net anime series that consists of four, five-minute episodes that’ll feature mini characters and debut online at some point.
This is in addition to the previously announced tenth anniversary OVA that those who backed the crowdfunded project should be getting very soon. It’s a little disappointing that this wasn’t news of another season, but it’s better than nothing, and any excuse to see these characters again is a very welcome treat.
It feels like it’s been forever since the news of the sequel to Sailor Moon Crystal Season III, but now, we finally have some concrete info to pass along. The two-part anime movie, Sailor Moon Eternal, will finally premiere in Japan in 2020. Check out the teaser video below.
I believe this project was announced way back in 2017, and it originally made appearances in both our Yuri Anime 2018 and Yuri Anime 2019 lists, so it’s great that there’ll be no more false alarms. I’m not familiar at all with Sailor Moon, but Sailor Moon Crystal Season III featured Sailor Uranus and Sailor Neptune, as well as that kiss between Sailor Uranus and Sailor Moon, so maybe Eternal will have more yuri for us~
Next up, we have another look at the newest installment in the Gochuumon wa Usagi Desu ka? series, Gochuumon wa Usagi desu ka??: Sing for You. Take a look.
September is when fans should be able to check this one out on Blu-ray and DVD, and if it’s anything like previous installments, you can assure that it’s going to deliver more cuteness than any one person is capable of withstanding. Prepare yourselves! 😛
Lastly, Seven Seas is once again delivering the yuri goods to us! At Anime Expo earlier this month, they announced that their new licenses included the side-story light novel Bloom Into You: Regarding Saeki Sayaka, Akiko Morishima’s The Conditions for Paradise, as well as Citrus+. It’s Christmas in July, everyone! 😀
February 2020 is when you’ll be able to get your grubby little hands on the first volume of of best girl Sayaka’s story, which is penned by Adachi to Shimamura author Hitoma Imura, with Nio Nakatani handling the art.
Citrus+ will be simultaneously published in digital form this fall, and the print version should follow in February. I think an OVA would be the perfect companion to this, don’t you think? Unlikely as it may be, let’s cross our fingers that our prayers will be answered.
Finally, The Conditions for Paradise from Akiko Morishima will also ship in February 2020, which is already shaping up to be quite the month. Consisting of eight stories plus an extra, this manga has been around for a while, yet it’s at long last coming home. Thanks Seven Seas!
Lastly, those of you who have been (very) patiently waiting for more KanColle, we may have the next best thing. Come October, the anime adaptation of Azur Lane, yet another game franchise about anthropomorphic ship girls, will begin airing.
In case you’re not all that familiar with the franchise, here’s a short teaser to get you better acquainted~
The show is coming our way from Bibury Animation Studio, a relatively new animation studio founded by the director of Kiniro Mosaic, Rewrite, Grisaia no Kajitsu, and Grisaia no Rakuen. Even if this anime doesn’t end up having any actual yuri, it looks like it’s going to be just like KanColle and will have a TON of ships (literally and figuratively), so get ready!
Really interesting. Of course Ghost is one of the all time great animes and anything Mr Mamoru touches is gold so doing a girl centric work could be very appealing!
Got really excited about my best girl Sayaka coming back until the fine print, Ms Nakatani is not
doing the story only the art work! Whats sup with that¥
Anything at all about the world of Yuru Yuri, and I will be there for that. Love everthing about that work especially the characters. Would have liked to have seen another season but Ah Wilderness!
And then there is that thing called Citrus. Don’t want to start a flame war by making injudicious remarks. There are still rabid fans out there and I have all ready been eviserated on another blog in making some mild critical remarks about Overlord!!! So Citrus fans pour some wine relax in a comfy chair and count bunnies and butterflies. I do not think that Ms Saburouta can tell a coherent story.
Fell in love with Yuzu and Mei. Hard to like Mei but still a beautiful creation. The story was progressing, characters were developing whats not to like. Well for me I noticed the story began to recycle on itself and instead of moving forward the great characters already created, new characters in new situations were introduced and for me only, citrus began to feel like same-old, same-olds backquoting itself until that rediculous ending which felt like a deus ex machina. And now we have +
Which is an attempt to fix Citrus 1 and for my tastes in fruit, its like a sour grapefruit, yeah I can eat it but good lord, give me some sweetness clothes.of eating constant angst. Saburouta art is excellent and characters like Harumin and Matsuri don’t get much better than that, but thats the problem. In my book only the Citrus narrative didn’t much better than that.
If you are a rabid Citruscite, I profoundly apologize for poking your sacred cow, but I am so sorry, the Emperess is not wearing any clothes.

With Nakatani not doing the story, maybe Sayaka will be better off because of it. A revelation that Touko is leading Yuu on because she lost a bet, and when Yuu confesses her love to Touko, Touko will finally tell her the truth: that her and Sayaka have already eloped, since their parents have already set them up for an arranged marriage?
^^ I should totally be hired to write the next volume! 😀
Then you should take that as a sign that you shouldn’t be cheating on YuriReviews with another blog! 😛
But I’ll let your hot take stand on its own, since I have no strong feelings one way or the other.

Gosh! Feel like I have been cheating! Interesting take on Ms. Nakatani not writing the story. I wonder if it’s canon? It would have to be if she is drawing it?
And you’re right, should not have posted such a hot button topic on Citrus, rubbing too many furs the wrong way. I was so invested initially in the story and I just felt so worn down as it meandered along to wear it is now!
Thanks for the update.

I’d imagine that even though Nakatani isn’t the one writing it, she still has a significant say in what gets written, and it’s not like there’s gonna be anything that really changes the story as we know it.
You didn’t get any hate replies about Citrus, so you might as well consider it a victory. 😛

When I saw the news about Vladlove about a week ago, at first I was like “Wait, Mamoru Oshii is making a comedy CGDCT anime? The man behind Patlabor and GitS movies, and a ton of other great and unique groundbreaking stuff? Welp, I guess it’s time to kill myself, because I don’t want to exist in this terrifying reality anymore!”. Then I was like “Junji Nishimura? Well, he is a great director for sure, even if his stories can be lackluster sometimes. Ok, what’s actually is going on here?”. Then I was like “Wait, ‘serious girl-meets-girl story’? And the character designs look great. What the heck? Okay, NOW I want it EXACTLY BECAUSE Oshii curates this project! GIVE EVERYTHING YOU HAVE TO ME RIGHT NOW!”

Between this news and Shinichiro Watanabe’s involvement in the slightly yuri-ish Carole & Tuesday, it makes me think everybody is wanting to hop aboard the yuri hypetrain. 😀
Next stop, Makoto Shinkai and Hayao Miyazaki! 😀

Since I don’t like dubs 95% of time, that makes one of us. 😛

Make that at least two. Never do dubs, ever! I may not know Japanese, but I certainly can feel the emotions in the Japanese voice actor’s reading!

Kase is just so cute! Its almost a crime that there is not a full series. Look forward to the movie. Thanks for the info.

Azure lane should be fun but in the end all those chicks are in love with “the commander”, thus will probably be getting a lot of annoying references of this. Kinda like KanColle, but I believe in KanColle there actually is a yuri relationship, I forget. Correct me if I am wrong.

I think it shouldn’t be a problem as long as the commander doesn’t really play a role, kind of like the admiral in KanColle.
And yeah, I think Ooi and Kitakami are pretty much canon. 😛

So, before July ends, two news dropped that might be relevant:
First is null-peta, an anime original with Eku Takeshima as the character design, who is a yuri mangaka (so kinda like Namori design characters for Release the Spyce and Endro!), so this seems to be promising. Oh, and it aired in Fall this year.

Second, Rifle is Beautiful is confirmed to air in fall this year.

I remember commenting how Fall this year going to be a wasteland, but apparently it is saved in time…
Finally, because I am not sure where to post this, for those who don’t know, Miru Tights turns out have a yuri subplot. I watched it for shit and giggles (legging isn’t exactly my fetish), but I am pleasantly surprised with what I get. It is still a fetish show with 2 minutes run time, so don’t expect the yuri to be deep or anything. And when BD released, it planned to have a bonus episode which seems to be promising…

This might have some yuri(ish) potential for Spring of next year:

We need more yuri-ish sports anime, so hopefully something becomes of this. And since I don’t like baseball, I’ve never seen an anime about it, but in this case, I can make an exception. 😛

Someone started a translation of the mentioned Bloom Into You Sayaka side story:

Parts of the first two books are available, so if you want to take a sneak peek give it a look see 😛

Thank you! That is really interesting and goes a long way in fleshing out Sayaka but its all backstory. With just two chapters to go, there does not appear anyway we will learn what happens to Sayaka? Even Doujima might find a pair and there is the very slightest hint of Koyomi and her author, but Sayaka is flat out alone. And from comments, Sayaka appears to be a very popular character with the fanbase. It hurts to always see Sayaka alone in Bloom.
