My Top 10 Favorite Yuri Characters [Updated]

Oh man, it’s been a while since I made one of these. Well, instead of posting an all-new Top 10 list, I thought about updating all my existing ones, starting with my Top 10 Favorite Yuri Characters.

As it turns out, quite a few of my picks from years ago still stay in my Top 10. However, there are quite a few newcomers as well.

I hope you enjoy~

If you feel like it, leave your Top 10 to discuss in the comments~

10. Shizuma Hanazono (Strawberry Panic)
shizuma strawberry panic

The award for the hottest lady-killer definitely goes to Shizuma. And even though I absolutely can’t stand people who play with the feelings of others, I can’t really get myself to dislike her. Also, it’s thanks to her that we got to see so many yuri kisses, or at least all these great moments in which kisses almost happened.

Anime Winter Season 2019: Final Thoughts

2019 winter anime season final thoughts

It’s that time of the year again, so enjoy our Final Thoughts of the 2019 winter anime season that just came to an end~

Endro~! • 7/10
Length: 12 Episodes • Genre: Fantasy, Magic, Slice of Life

endro~! anime
Ever since we heard of Namori’s involvement with Endro~!, yuri fans were hoping we’d get a little something something from this show, and now that it’s finished, I can confidently say that it does indeed have a little bit of subtext. Not a ton, but it’s probably somewhere in the 3 range in our patented YuriReviews rating system. It’s definitely less than that other anime that got some help from Namori, Release the Spyce, but it’s better than nothing. 😛

There aren’t enough cute girls doing cute things anime that have a fantasy setting, so this is a nice, little treat we have on our hands. I would have liked the show to play up the fantasy a little more though, because it did it in the goofiest of ways. Quests are ridiculous, tropes are numerous, and this ended up being quite a bit of fun, so I wanted more of that type of stuff. It’s nothing exceptional, yet I think fans of the genre will still enjoy Endro~!‘s brand of humor, and I also think they’ll take a liking to these characters. Yusha, Seiran, Mei, and Fai ended up being quite charming, even though they’re definitely fitting very snugly into established character types. Despite her showing a little bit of interest in Yusha, Rona was definitely my least favorite character, and I honestly, I’m glad she didn’t play a bigger role. While I’m at it, Mao was someone I wanted to see more of, since she’s so cute and funny (and she kind of reminds me of Satania from Gabriel DropOut). Anyway, they’re all very cute (Mao, Rona, and Chibi included), and together, they form a pretty solid cast of characters.

Overall, I think Endro~! was a slight upgrade over Release the Spyce (not a very impressive feat, I know), and fans of cute girls doing cute things stand a good chance of being entertained by what this anime has to offer. It’s super cute and colorful, and even though it doesn’t have as much subtext as fans would prefer, it’s still an entertaining little show that I wouldn’t mind seeing get a second season.

Game Guest Review: Nights of Azure 2 – by NotATsun

H2x1_NSwitch_NightsOfAzure2BrideOfTheNewMoon_image1600w

Nights of Azure 2: Bride of the New Moon is the sequel of Nights of Azure. You can read the review I wrote on the original here.

If you haven’t played the first one, then I highly recommend starting there for two reasons. The main reason is that the first one is a piece of art, through gameplay, battle system, graphics, and especially the story. It will forever stay as one of my favorite games of all time. Sadly, it by far exceeds the sequel in every aspect. The second reason is that there are some characters and references from the first game that will make your experience in the second game more enjoyable, however the truth is you won’t miss out on any of the story if you don’t. I will try not to make this review solely a comparison with the first game, so I’ll only say one more time that I highly recommend the first game because it is so much better… play it!

Yuri News Update: March 2019 – Part II

We got a lot of news to cover again, so let’s get right to it!

fragtime yuri anime adaptation
Let’s start with what surprised me—and probably a lot more people—the most this month: We’ll get another yuri anime adaptation, and it’s going to be a work that I had almost forgotten about, Fragtime by Sato.

Story: What would you do if you could stop time? Moritani for one is using her unusual ability to stop time for three minutes a day to observe the people around her. One day, she chooses to “observe” class idol Murakami’s panties—only to find herself in a very compromising situation when her classmate turns out to be immune to her power.

Visual Novel Review: Heart of the Woods

heart of the woods yuri visual novel

Spoiler Warning!

Title: Heart of the Woods
Developer: Studio Élan
Publisher: Sekai Project / Studio Élan / Denpasoft
Length: About 8 Hours
Genre: Fantasy, Romance, Yuri

Traveling to a remote village in the woods, Maddie and Tara have low expectations. The two run a popular online show focusing on the supernatural, but thus far it’s been nothing but smoke and mirrors. When they receive an invitation to the antiquated village of Eysenfeld, they’re expecting more of the same. But it soon becomes apparent that the locals are hiding a secret. Maddie sees unnatural beasts in the forest that she’s sure are products of her imagination. Lights in the woods flicker and sparkle but disappear if she gets too close.

In time she learns that the lights come from a girl named Abigail. Well, the ghost of a girl. She was sacrificed hundreds of years ago by the villagers to appease the god of the forest. Maddie devotes her time in Eysenfeld to getting to know Abigail, and eventually promises to break the curse that binds her to the woods.

What a visual novel! I know, this is a weird way to start out a review, but what can I say? I was not prepared for what this one had to offer.

[Guest Post] Don’t Know What To Read Next? Part 13 – by shade

a tropical fish yearns for snow yuri manga

Title: Nettaigyo wa Yuki ni Kogareru (A Tropical Fish Yearns for Snow)

Artist: Makoto Hagino

Genre: Blushing, Comedy, School Life, Subtext

Status: Ongoing (16 Chapters)

Description:

Konatsu Amano is a high school girl who has just moved to a seaside town in Ehime Prefecture after her father is transferred overseas for his job. Lonely and unsure of her new surroundings, Konatsu finds herself gravitating towards Koyuki Honami, an older girl at her school who is popular but is seen as out of reach by her peers who view her as too perfect. Koyuki is also the sole member of the Aquarium Club, which in turn makes her feel cut off from others. In an attempt to help ease Koyuki’s and her own feelings of loneliness, Konatsu befriends Koyuki and the two gradually grow closer together.

This is one big ball of fluffy subtexty subtext. Honami is admired by everyone, which unfortunately keeps her at arms length from them. But it’s the lonely, new transfer student Konatsu who, unburdened by that, slowly breaks down the barriers to actually get close to her. It’s great how obvious it is that they slowly develop feelings for each other, but they have no idea themselves. Also, pseudo talking animals, and a nice wing job by the dads!
