But us anime fans know that we just don’t have it as good as the manga fans do, so instead of a multi-part series, we thought it might be better to simply break down our recommendations by genre/subgenre in one giant post. I’m guessing the average YR reader will already know about pretty much all of these shows, so I guess you can say that this post is skewed more towards newer yuri fans that have finally seen the light and discovered that yuri is the purest form of love. 😛
Genre: 404: Men Not Found, Blushing, Comedy, Delinquent, School girl, Yuri
Status: Ongoing (12 Chapters)
Class president and overall good girl Koguma is concerned that her classmate Hino often skips classes by spending her time behind one of the school buildings. Koguma feels it’s her duty to guide Hino down a better path, even if it means going along with Hino’s unusual requests.
I just love the way Hino teases Koguma through misdirection that results in her giving in to Hino’s various requests. The playfulness of their back and forth conversations leave me laughing at the end, especially when a frantic Koguma finally gives in. In the end, between Koguma’s dedication to looking after Hino as well as Hino’s ability to pull Koguma along, they are slowly able to close the distance between them. Also, Koguma as a cat is too darn cute! 😀
Title: Nettaigyo wa Yuki ni Kogareru (A Tropical Fish Yearns for Snow)
Artist: Makoto Hagino
Genre: Blushing, Comedy, School Life, Subtext
Status: Ongoing (16 Chapters)
Konatsu Amano is a high school girl who has just moved to a seaside town in Ehime Prefecture after her father is transferred overseas for his job. Lonely and unsure of her new surroundings, Konatsu finds herself gravitating towards Koyuki Honami, an older girl at her school who is popular but is seen as out of reach by her peers who view her as too perfect. Koyuki is also the sole member of the Aquarium Club, which in turn makes her feel cut off from others. In an attempt to help ease Koyuki’s and her own feelings of loneliness, Konatsu befriends Koyuki and the two gradually grow closer together.
This is one big ball of fluffy subtexty subtext. Honami is admired by everyone, which unfortunately keeps her at arms length from them. But it’s the lonely, new transfer student Konatsu who, unburdened by that, slowly breaks down the barriers to actually get close to her. It’s great how obvious it is that they slowly develop feelings for each other, but they have no idea themselves. Also, pseudo talking animals, and a nice wing job by the dads!
After her parents passed away, Shinobu Indou starts learning as a cadet in a military academy. She arrives to the scene looking pretty ragged and thus gets picked on by one of her senpais, Kagami Fujino. However, as soon as she starts paying more attention to her appearance, Kagami suddenly starts acting very, very different towards her, rather trying to help and get close to Shinobu, instead of picking fights.
This one caught me by surprise. You could say the gorgeous art caught my attention, and the story kept me there. Well, the story and Kagami. Their chemistry is rather odd at first, but during the few instances in which Kagami lets her true feelings slip, you just can’t help but fall in love with them. I can’t wait to see how this continues~
Title: Miss Angel and Miss Devil Artist: Maeu Malgeum Genre: Fantasy, Slice of Life, Yuri Status: Ongoing – 100+ chapters Description:
The story of how a certain pair of devils got closer to a certain pair of angel, all set in a universe in which devils and angels both might not exactly show the character traits we all expect them to show. What we can expect though is a story so packed with yuri romance that the whole devil/angel idea might as well only be secondary.
Adorable! All of the four main girls are simply adorable together! I just love their chemistry, that applies to both the long-term relationship couple that just can’t stop constantly flirting and the super slow burn couple “in development” that obviously belong together but just take their sweet time getting there. The only thing that kept my enjoyment in check was the sometimes very poor translation. Often, it’s so bad you don’t even know what’s going on in the story. However, despite that, I highly recommend this lovely piece, because the awesome art is capable of telling the story even without text.
Bo-Eun is quiet and soft spoken in high school. She befriends a stray cat that she names Dallae and shortly aftwards bumps into Saeyeon, who it turns out attends her high school. While watching the smart and sporty Saeyeon from a far, she eventually becomes infatuated with her but is too shy to approach her. Fast forward to college and Bo-Eun discovers that Saeyeon attends a school close by. Still not confident, Bo-Eun confides to Dallae about her desire for Saeyeon and the dreams she has of her. Turns out the cat has an inside track into the goings on of Saeyeon.
I like how minimalistic the art and dialog in this one is. It’s all about looks and glances between the two and lots of blushing. It’s one of those that are roughly drawn, but it communicates so much. It’s a slow burn romance story of the shy Bo-Eun and mysterious Saeyeon, whose slow advances eventually break through to the ever timid Bo-Eun. I really like this one so far, it’s fluffy and makes you chuckle, too.Continue reading →
Yup, shortest description ever, I know. 😛 Though, so far, we’ve only got 2 chapters and yet, this is one of my favorites works right now. Nekomura is already my number one author, and this work just proves that it doesn’t necessarily have to be a KanColle doujin, but she can deliver the yuri goodness even with original characters. Please more!
