Let’s Talk About Gacha Games & Their Yuri Potential

Well, it’s been a while again, huh? Just take a guess where I’ve been or what I’ve been doing all this time. Correct, I pretty much lost my myself (and my money) in gacha games. Two specific ones to be more precise.

But as always, let’s organize this post a bit and start with some basic information. Like what are gacha games?

Some of you might not know what it is, even though you might have heard about some titles that fall into this category. Let’s take Kantai Collection from back in the day, for example, or Azur Lane. Then there’s Fate/Grand Order, Arknights and as of recently, Genshin Impact. All vastly different games you might say, but all of them involve some special lottery kind of feature where you can spend in-game currencies in order to receive some mostly random item or character. While these games are usually free, you can spend money to get more of these in-game currencies, which in return will enable you to get more “pulls” or draws from the lottery system.

We would’ve included our Final Thoughts for this show, but considering how the production problems have led to the final two episodes being delayed till March, it’ll just have to wait. And yeah, you read that right, delayed all the way until March. MARCH. That seems like forever, but at least we should have a few yuri-ish anime to enjoy until then~

What to Look Forward to in 2020

Now that we’re in 2020, it’s time to once again look ahead at what the rest of the year has in store for us. Overall, 2019 was another solid year for yuri fans, with plenty of manga and visual novels to choose from, but you couldn’t say the same about anime. The good news is that it can’t get much worse, so hopes are high that 2020 could be an improvement.

adachi to shimamura anime

Looking ahead to 2020, the first thing that sticks out to me is the fact that we already have a pure yuri anime to look forward to. Over the summer, it was announced that Adachi to Shimamura would be getting an anime adaptation, and even though we still don’t know the length of the anime, it’s nice to know that there’s something good on the way~

Yuri News Update: January 2020

First off, Happy New Year to everyone. Hope you’re all doing well, and even though it’s the very first day of the year, we gotta get prepped for what the remaining 364 days have in store for us. As you may have noticed, YR has grown up so much, and we can now say with authority that we are the biggest yuri blog on the planet, literally! 😀

But enough about our good looks, let’s get this year started off right~

adachi to shimamura yuri anime

Finally, we have some concrete info on 2020’s most anticipated (and so far only) pure yuri anime, Adachi to Shimamura. As you can see above, the show got a new visual to gawk at, but we now know which studio is in charge of production. It turns out it’s Tezuka Productions that will be doing the honors.

The studio is best-known for titles such as Black Jack and Astro Boy, but they’re also responsible for more recent anime like Dagashi Kagashi 2, and the studio also co-produced the excellent 2019 adaptation of Dororo. Oh, they’re also responsible for 1991’s Oniisama e…, which we’ll be reviewing in the coming weeks~

But enough talking, watch the PV already!

Oh yeah, that’s the good stuff we need more of. The hype train just picked up a lot of steam with this PV, and because it looks good and is coming from a legitimate studio, every yuri fan should be looking forward to this. We still don’t know when AdaShima will premiere, but it’s safe to say that a lot of people will have that date circled on their calendar.

Anime Fall Season 2019: First Impressions

2019 fall anime season

It’s that time of the year again, so enjoy our First Impressions of the 2019 fall anime season that just started~

Azur Lane

You’d think that because this anime bears such an uncanny resemblance to KanColle that Lena would be all over it, but she actually didn’t enjoy the first episode. We’re officially living in a bizarro world… 😛

But back to the subject at hand. Azur Lane does seem A LOT like KanColle, but I think there were just enough differences that this might be able to stand on its own. The four different camps trying to repel the Sirens was an interesting development, but seeing those four camps split into two warring factions was even more interesting. I’m not familiar with the game at all, but all I know is that it’s basically more anthropomorphic ship girls fighting one another, so I’m not expecting anything too compelling from a story standpoint.

Compared to KanColle, I thought that Azur Lane seemed to have more cutesy characters, with the main exceptions being Akagi, Kaga, and Enterprise. KanColle had an entire class (Akatsuki Class Destroyers) of cute little girls, but it seems Azur Lane might have it beat in that regard. Laffey was probably my favorite character, but Unicorn and Enterprise were also likable to me. It’s early, but I’m thinking I prefer the characters from KanColle. And then there’s Akaga, who seem awfully close to one another, but in direct comparison to that other Akaga, they don’t seem as charismatic to me. Yuri-wise, there only seems to be Akaga at the moment, so this show has some ground to make up to reach the yuri level of KanColle. Overall, I think this seems like it could at least be a decent bridge until the second season of KanColle, if it ever happens…

It should be noted that, like every year, there were some shows that ultimately didn’t make it into this year. Anyway, just click on the one of the seasons to jump to that part of the post. 😛
