It’s that time of the year again, so enjoy our Final Thoughts of the spring anime season that just came to an end~
BATTLE ATHLETESS DAIUNDOUKAI RESTART!
After watching the first episode a few months ago, it was pretty clear that this revival of Battle Athletess wasn’t going to be good, but this was a classic case of a franchise that should’ve stayed dormant. In every regard, this seemed like a regression from the previous Battle Athletess anime, which I didn’t even think were that great to begin with. There are so many bad things to point out here, but maybe the thing that stuck out the most to me was just how boring this was. The straightforward plot made the competition to become the next Cosmo Beauty almost irrelevant, since the events often took a backseat to the meddling from an incredibly generic set of villains, and it was clear that none of the other girls were a real challenge to Kanata or Eva. Even the finale was amazingly anti-climactic, so I was bored for almost the entire twelve episode run.
As you can tell, we’re not picking up a lot of shows this season. There just isn’t much to choose from for yuri fans (yet again), and I don’t want to force it and watch anime that I know doesn’t interest me. Still, the show must go on, so here are our First Impressions of the few shows that we are beginning to watch~
Battle Athletess Daiundoukai ReSTART!
Studio: Seven • Genre: Action, Adventure, Comedy, School, Sci-Fi, Sports
It wasn’t that long ago that I reviewed the Battle Athletes OVA from the late nineties. I thought it was meh, but it did deliver some yuri, so of course I’m going to be interested in this revival, even though it has a whole new cast of characters and a mediocre (at best) studio involved. Even though I’ve only seen the original OVA and not the TV anime, the one thing that kept popping into my mind while watching the first episode of ReSTART! was how much I preferred the 90s anime over this.
February came and went in a flash, so now that March is here, it’s time for another Yuri News Update. As always, if we missed anything important, feel free to mention it down in the comments~
First up, the hype train for the second season of Kobayashi-san Chi no Maid Dragon is going full speed ahead, and if this new PV is any indication, the summer anime season should be pretty fun. Let’s take a look~
Yup, I want it now. As expected, the stars of the first season are returning, but in the aftermath of the KyoAni arson attack, some changes to the production staff had to be made. This includes a new director, who moves over from the Hibike! Euphonium and Nichijou series, after the director of Kobayashi-san‘s first season unfortunately passed away in the attack.
On a brighter note, Kobayashi-san Chi no Dragon Maid S continues to look like the yuri anime event of the year, and I have little doubt that this is going to be nothing less than a great time. July can’t come soon enough~
Year: 1997 – 1998
Length: 6 Episodes
Genre: Action, Comedy, Ecchi, Sci-Fi, Space, Sports
Synopsis: It is the year 4999 – mankind has long abandoned war in favor of intergalactic competition through athletic events. One of which is an all-female contest for the coveted “Cosmo Beauty” title. Akari Kanzaki has just entered the University Satellite in hopes of becoming the latest Cosmic Beauty – a title held by her mother long ago. On her first few days in the university, she meets new friends, encounters fierce rivals, and struggles to become the best of all the Battle Athletes.
Summer is officially here, and with it comes another Yuri News Update. As has been the case lately, there’s a lot to get to, and as always, if we missed something important, feel free to mention it in the comments~
It makes sense to start this Yuri News Update with some good news. From what I hear, perhaps this spring season’s most pleasant surprise has been My Next Life as a Villainess, which you guys have recommended to me on more than one occasion, so it’s great that a second season was announced at the end of this season’s final episode. 2021 is when you can expect the new season to arrive, so next year is already starting to take shape quite nicely.
I actually haven’t started watching the first season yet, but since our Spring Final Thoughts post is planned for next week, I better hurry the hell up! *rushes to finish writing this post*
