2020 Winter Anime Season: First Impressions

2020 winter anime season

It’s that time of the year again, so enjoy our First Impressions of the 2020 winter anime season that just started~

Darwin’s Game
Studio: Nexus • Genre: Action, Mystery

darwin's game anime
Nowadays, it’s not too uncommon to find media (be it anime, movie, or whatever) that revolves around a deadly game, and now you can add Darwin’s Game to the list. This supersized first episode starts off with a guy in a mascot suit killing someone, which sounds kinda corny, doesn’t it? Well, this anime is already consistent, because it ends just as cheesy as it began…

“Darwin’s Game” is a mobile game that basically pits players against each other in battles to the death, and it seems that if you die in the game, you die in real life. That’s nothing new, and even though this episode felt really familiar, I found it kind of enjoyable. The battle sequences were alright, especially the ones involving Shuka, the blonde girl that kinda uses chains like Spider-Man uses webs (except he doesn’t stab people with the bladed tips :P). So far, Shuka seems like the most interesting character, and the protagonist seems like your run-of-the-mill guy who has no idea what’s going on, but lucky for him, he’s actually super powerful.

To me, this seems like one of those shows that is unlikely to get much better, so you’ll know early on whether you’ll like it or not. I think Darwin’s Game got off to an okay start, and while I wouldn’t be that surprised if it ends up getting worse instead of getting better, for now at least, this has my interest.

What to Look Forward to in 2020

Now that we’re in 2020, it’s time to once again look ahead at what the rest of the year has in store for us. Overall, 2019 was another solid year for yuri fans, with plenty of manga and visual novels to choose from, but you couldn’t say the same about anime. The good news is that it can’t get much worse, so hopes are high that 2020 could be an improvement.

adachi to shimamura anime

Looking ahead to 2020, the first thing that sticks out to me is the fact that we already have a pure yuri anime to look forward to. Over the summer, it was announced that Adachi to Shimamura would be getting an anime adaptation, and even though we still don’t know the length of the anime, it’s nice to know that there’s something good on the way~

Yuri Anime 2020

yuri anime 2020

Just like our Yuri Anime 2013, Yuri Anime 2014, Yuri Anime 2015, Yuri Anime 2016, Yuri Anime 2017, Yuri Anime 2018, and Yuri Anime 2019 lists, this one will also feature all the yuri-ish shows that will air in 2020. Since it’s not even 2020 yet, this list is still in progress and will be updated whenever there are new shows to add. If you feel like we missed something, feel free to name your additions~

And for some anime that SEEM to have yuri potential, we might include those until our hopes are dashed in the worst way possible. 😛

Yuri News Update: December 2019

It’s the final Yuri News Update of the year (and decade), so, unsurprisingly, most of this month’s stories involve some of what will be taking up our time in 2020. So for the last time in 2019, let’s do this.

What to Look Forward to in 2019

After such an awesome year where yuri fans were able to witness major yuri anime adaptations from the likes of Citrus, Bloom Into You, and even Asagao to Kase-san., it’s time to look into the future and see what 2019 has in store for us.

Admittedly, 2018 spoiled us big time, probably not so much with a lot of major visual novel releases, but definitely when it comes to anime. I guess there’s just no way the new year can get anywhere close to that. Still, even now, we already know of quite a few anime releases that we should get excited for in 2019!
