Because it’s the end of the decade, we thought we had to have it go out in style by creating a star-studded award ceremony celebrating yuri’s best and brightest. If I wasn’t allergic to manga and visual novels (:P), this post would be even bigger, but as it is, there are over 30 awards up for grabs, so take a seat as we do our best Oprah impersonation and just hand out the honors.
Oh, and because it’s a super special occasion, there are also a few non-yuri awards handed out, but enough talking! Let’s get started~
Just like every year, we’ll of course pick our favorites of what 2018 had in store for us. And just to make it a little more interactive for your guys as well, we’ll let you decide for your winners in these categories in next weeks post, so please look forward to that~
Now, without further ado, here’s our picks for 2018~
Lena’s Best Yuri Anime: Bloom Into You
Did you guys expect me to pick Citrus? Actually, I thought so too, but then Bloom Into You just hit so hard that I just have to go with that one instead. I’m still all for cute Yuzu going crazy over stoic, emotionless Mei, but oh man, how can you resist the charms of Touko and her cute ways of showing her love?!
Yeah, Yuu is all fine, but damn. It was definitely Touko—and not to forget Sayaka—who rather made the show for me. And while I might have rooted a little for these two instead of the more obvious couple, the blooming relationship between Touko and Yuu was a pleasure to witness as well. It just felt like a breath of fresh air, something that has never been done before quite like that, and I enjoyed the living hell out of it. So needless to say, I’ll probably re-watch this quite a few times and most likely enjoy it just like the first time. That’s how good this one is~
Another year has passed and it yet again went by so fast again…
Luckily, we were yet again blessed with some quite nice yuri, be it in anime, in manga, and especially in visual novels. So following old YuriReviews tradition, here are our yuri awards for 2017, enjoy!~
Lena’s Best Yuri Anime: Kobayashi-san Chi no Maid Dragon
This was by far my favorite show of the entire year. Who would have thought that an anime from KyoAni would EVER feature more than only queerbaiting? Not only that, the anime features several couples, with a main cast that is pretty much completely gay and open about that, too!
Tooru, for example, never made a big secret out of her love for Kobayashi and rather screamed it out for the whole world to know whenever she felt like it. And even if this might sound like the yuri was only depicted in a comedic way, the heartfelt moments of the show proved that it was in fact not only that, but true love instead, seeing that they would both go to great lengths to be with each other.
In short, I was seriously surprised by this show, in all the right ways~
Since our love of Overwatch knows no bounds, a Let’s Talk About post just wasn’t enough for us. So even though it’s a little weird for a yuri blog to have a review of a mainstream game like this, we’re not your ordinary yuri blog, baby~ 😛
Can you believe it? It’s been 2 years since I last updated this list?! Surely, a lot has changed in these 2 years, so it’s about time to add some new pairings to the list and update my thoughts on the ones that have been in there for years already~
Finé is already one of my favorite anime characters of 2016, while Izetta probably made it to my top 3 cutest anime characters of all-time. So even without pairing them up with each other, I’m absolutely in love with both of them. However, if you now ship them with each other, what emerges from this simple equation of Finé + Izetta, is simply heavenly.
Those two compliment each other wonderfully, with strong and badass Finé handling her beloved and oh so loyal Izetta with the utmost care.
Their scenes together are some of the most enjoyable moments in anime history, and it makes me wonder just why in the world there hasn’t been more fan art and doujinshi about them. It’s something that I really can’t understand, as to me, they seem like the perfect match~
We all knew that one day, I would definitely find a reason to dedicate a whole blog post to my new favorite game, and guess what? Today’s the day.
I’ve now been playing the game for over half a year, loving it throughout all this time, though, let me assure you, I won’t waste your time just telling you how much I love it. Instead, why not focus on the yuri aspect with this post?
When it comes to that, I’ve come to compare Overwatch a lot with Love Live!. To make it a little more clear what I’m talking about, let me just say the following: Fandoms of both titles tend to ship the characters a lot – with each other. Of course, there are many other games, as well as shows, where this applies, but these two go way further when it comes to shipping than many others go. It’s not just a few popular pairings, no, you could almost say that pretty much every character get shipped with numerous others, depending on what people enjoy most. You can easily google what I personally would call a weird pairing, like let’s say D.Va x Symmetra, and still get quite a number of fitting results. Same goes for Love Live!, which is exactly why the two feel so similar when it comes to this aspect. Kantai Collection might be another game with a similar, let’s say “shipping system”, though right there, we got many more than 100 different characters, and despite the fact that there are quite a few crack pairings, most of the characters have a set ship girl that they usually get paired up with.
Yet again, the year went by in a flash, or at least that’s how it feels to me. And in old YuriReviews fashion, we’ll of course talk about our highlights of this oh so short year, so let’s just get right to it.
I feel like, compared to 2015, 2016 had a noticeably larger amount of yuri content to offer to us, especially when it comes to Visual Novels. FLOWERS, Kindred Spirits on the Roof, and Nurse Love Addiction, just to name some big titles here. But that’s the thing, despite having them and numerous others, it doesn’t just stop there. There are actually even more in the making right now, and that is a situation that has never, ever been there before. Continue reading →
