Anime Fall Season 2016: Final Thoughts

2016 fall anime

It’s that time of the year again, so enjoy our Final Thoughts on the fall anime season that just came to an end~

Hibike! Euphonium 2 • 7.5/10
Length: 13 Episodes • Genre: Drama, Music, School

And the queer-baiting continues… .

As many of us already saw coming, this season of Hibike! also didn’t magically reveal our two main girls as the raging lesbians we all see them as. Well, some of you already stayed away from this season exactly because you already knew that KyoAni wouldn’t give us what we really want, though, despite the fact that it turned out just as expected, I can’t say I regret watching this even one bit. The gay moments between Reina and Kumiko (and later even between a surprising other pair) were as strong as ever, and no matter what Reina might feel for Taki, her feelings for Kumiko came off much stronger than anything she might feel for him.

So in my eyes, especially Reina is still very oblivious to her own feelings. Yup, that must be true!

Yuri Anime / Manga / Visual Novel Awards 2016

2016 yuri anime manga visual novel awards

2016 had a lot to offer. Maybe not too many yuri anime, but definitely a lot of other yuri media, such as a ton of yuri visual novels and some really awesome new yuri manga.

So in old YuriReviews fashion, we would like to hand out some awards for who and what we think deserves these awards most this year:

Lena’s Best Yuri Anime: Shuumatsu no Izetta
shuumatsu no izetta

Well, other than the Valkyrie Drive Specials we can’t really say 2016 offered any other pure yuri show, so I guess we have to work with what we got and make the best of it, right? So, since I didn’t want to go with “only” some specials from a show that aired last year, I decided to go with the show that came closest to what I think is really yuri, which is Izetta: The Last Witch. Despite the fact that she show doesn’t label itself as yuri, nor do the two main characters ever really declare their love, I still feel like it’s pretty obvious that they actually do love each other—romantically, that is. And if they are not yet in a relationship with each other, then I’m freaking sure they will be at some point, since their chemistry was simply over the top amazing, just like the show itself~

Anime Review: Shuumatsu no Izetta

shuumatsu no izetta

Year: 2016
Episodes: 12
Genre: Fantasy, Historical, War

The story takes place on an alternate Earth, focusing on a time of war, similar to the events of World War II. We follow the story of 16-year-old Finé, crown princess of Eylstadt, a small alpine principality, on her struggle to keep her beloved country safe from Germania. Fortunately, she has long ago gained a powerful friend, Izetta, who is said to be the last witch on Earth and who is willing to give up everything to protect what’s most important to her princess, Finé.

This was THE show for me to watch this season, featuring everything that I long for in a show, badass female protagonists, gorgeous art, a compelling story, and of course, a high possibility for yuri content.

I had only hyped myself with the trailer before I started watching this, so despite the fact that I expected the just listed aspects to hit me, I didn’t know any more about this show, and that’s a good thing, because it left enough room for this show to completely blow me away.

Anime Fall Season 2016: First Impressions

2016 fall anime

It’s that time of the year again, so enjoy our First Impressions of the fall anime season that just started~

Hibike! Euphonium 2
Length: ? • Genre: Drama, Music, School • Studio: Kyoto Animation
hibike euphonium 2

Whoever thought that the second season of Hibike! Euphonium would feature any less yuri subtext than we already got in the first season was definitely in for a surprise, a very pleasant one. Not only did the yuri hype train start moving again, it was also fueled by so many small and big Kumiko x Reina moments that it’s hard to believe that it will ever come to an halt. I, in fact, can’t believe that any hetero romance for those two might be believable, especially for Reina, after seeing how they behave when they are around each other.

It was seriously the best thing in the world to watch these two interact with each other again, with all the subtle, and some even not so subtle, “yuri” gestures and looks they shared. I can’t wait for more, and I’m seriously going to throw a huge freaking tantrum if KyoAni actually includes any real heterosexual romance for either of my two new babies! Kyoto Animation, you have been warned!
