As suggested in our post about “interactive” blogposts, this specific topic showed up as well. So as the second topic in this new post category, we’re glad to have shade shine some light of wisdom on this interesting topic~
So let’s talk about the various roles food plays in yuri. The first thing you probably think of are the standard clichés like making a bento for senpai, or some porridge for a beloved sick one, and, of course, the staple that is Valentine’s Day. But I think when done in a yuri setting, even these formulaic scenes often get a bit more depth and sparkle because they strive to achieve something more than being that of an overused trope.
The year has admittedly been good, but definitely not the greatest when it comes to yuri anime and manga, at least in my opinion. Focusing on anime, we got some fair amount of shows with yuri subtext, like Kakegurui and the second seasons of New Game! and Love Live! Sunshine!!.
Though, the great highlights were rather shows like Kobayashi-san Chi no Maid Dragon, which simply surprised us with the amount of yuri—especially for a show by KyoAni—that seriously blurred the lines between only subtext and straight up yuri content. No one was really expecting that, which definitely makes this one of the greatest highlights of 2017 for me.
Having rebelled against the will of God, archangel Lucifer is cast out of heaven, doomed to spend the rest of her days in the pits of Hell. However, there is no way Lucifer would go without a fight, so by the time she arrives in Hell, she’s already made two allies, one being a human girl named Maria Totsuka—who she more or less unwillingly made her immortal slave—as well as the aspiring demon lord of envy, Leviathan. Together with these two, she begins her journey of revenge, challenging all of the seven deadly sins to reach her goal.

Oh, what a guilty pleasure this was… I was constantly torn between seriously not liking it for it’s over the top ecchiness and the ridiculous and kind of out of place singing scenes that happened almost each and every episode, and simply enjoying it for the fun it provided and also the yuri that more or less also stayed a constant element of the show for its whole run. I guess I can’t say I’m fully satisfied with its yuri content, even though we did get quite a lot, though that shall be part of my full review that we’ll post after the current tournament has ended. For now, let’s just say I expected some more in the yuri department, even though we definitely did get quite a lot~

Okay guys, I know this show is bad. Very bad, to be honest. We won’t get much plot, what we get might not make any sense, and the whole show will simply focus on girls with big boobs in skimpy clothing fighting girls in even less clothing with even bigger boobs.
Let’s just move past the fact that it’s just not gonna be the best show of the season and focus on something else, because what this show will feature is yuri content, a lot of it actually, if what the first episode had to offer will be continued—and I sure believe it will.
So far, it really all reminds me a little of Valkyrie Drive, just without the yuri romance, and funny thing is, I’m actually enjoying it. Not such a big surprise to some of you, I’m sure, but I personally didn’t expect that. So I guess this means this show is going to be my personal guilty pleasure of the season~
Just like our Yuri Anime 2013, Yuri Anime 2014, Yuri Anime 2015, and Yuri Anime 2016 lists, this one will also feature all the yuri shows that will air in 2017. Since it’s not even 2017 yet, this list is still in progress and will be updated whenever there are new shows to add. If you feel like we missed something, feel free to name your additions.
